measure. 3 new at five - a 40 million dollar grant is helping purdue expand its stem programs. president mitch daniels announced the university's new gateway complex this morning. as news 18's balint szalavari reports, the project will provide new opportunities for stem majors. 3<the new gateway complex will serve as the new home for the college of engineering and polytechnic institute.daniels: "we're going to get this building here as fast as we can. we're going to fill it up instantly, and we're going to try to make the very most of it." the complex will feature two buildings totaling more than 250 thousand square feet. purdue polytechnic institute dean gary bertoline says the building will create new learning opportunities. bertoline: "this is a teaching facility, so it'll be filled with labs, with modern kinds of facilities and also virtual labs where they can learn online and away from a formal classroom setting." purdue will be the nation's first university to feature the virtual labs.another part of the project is the hoosier hot corner.purdue engineering student council's president says it will allow indiana companies to meet directly with faculty and students. rumple: "it's a space where they can connect with faculty if they want to do research. they can hire interns.they can look for full time employees." the project was made possible in part due to a 40 million dollar lilly endowment grant. additional funding came from the state and private donations.president mitch daniels says such donations and projects continue to grow the community academically and economically.daniels: "the core of successful economic growth, the expansion of opportunity for large numbers of people, you will almost always find a research university." reporting from purdue, balint szalavari, news 18.> 3 construction will begin next spring.the project is scheduled to be completed in the fall
