trevor peters. 3 happening today - jury selection gets underway in the rial of a man accused of killing his wife in august 2017.according to prosecutors, it was all recorded on cell phone audio.it happened on august 8th, 2017 at a home on county road 500 south in lafayette.prosecutors say elliott told investigators he shot his wife donita in self-defense after she threated him with a knife. according to court documents, elliott says his wife's ongoing mental illness was causing problems in their marriage.prosecutors say a cell phone found in the home had a recording of the shooting.court documents say donita asked patrick for help after being shot, but he refused and said he would help her after watching her die. prosecutors say elliott admitted his earlier statements were untrue and admitted she did not have a knife - and that he planted the knife.neighbor wilma pilotte says she still can't understand why it had to end this way. 3<"he was like a son. he was that close, but so was she. we loved them both. that's the bad thing. we lost a nice neighbor." > jury selection begins this afternoon at the tippecanoe county courthouse. elliott faces up to 85 years in prison if he's convicted. news 18's anna darling is in the courtroom and will bring you a live report coming
