3 happening today, a man accused of the august 2017 shooting death of his wife will go to trial.news 18's samantha thieke is live with what a neighbor says patrick elliott told her in a phone call after killing his wife. sam? 3 the neighbor i spoke with says patrick told her donita had threatened to kill him in front of police the same day as the shooting.she says she's still in shock that someone who she thought of as a son, faces up to 85 years in prison for murder. 3it happened on august 8, 2017 at a home on county road 500 south in lafayette.prosecutors say elliott told investigators he shot his wife in self- defense after she threated him with a knife.according to court documents, elliott says his wife's ongoing mental illness was causing problems in their marriage.as we previously reported, deputies had been at the scene for several hours before the shooting, in response to a domestic incident.they left around 8 o'clock that night, only to be called back five hours later for the report of a shooting.wilma pilotte says she had seen the effects of donita's mental illness first hand.but says she can't believe patrick would feel no other choice but to kill his wife. 3<"this is out of character for patrick. the patrick that we knew. he never said a bad word. you couldn't have asked for a better kid." > prosecutors say there is a cell phone recording of the shooting.according to court documents, you can hear donita ask patrick for help after being shot, but he refused and said he would help her after watching her die.prosecutors also say elliott admitted his earlier statements were untrue and admitted she did not have a knife - and that he planted the knife. 3 the trial is the trial is set to begin at 8 a-m this morning.sam, there is 3some oth case to mention.a letter? yes, trevor.as we previously reported, a letter was put in mailboxes a day after donita was shot.and pilotte actually was one of the people to find it.it reads, "donita was saddened with mental illness. please know that bipolar and donita were separate entities." it later reads," i chose life and unfortunately my choice included in her death. i will wear that burden and guilt forever."
