forensic scientists are examining remains from the body in a benton county cold case.43 years ago a fowler farmer found a body in a cardboard box lying in his field.news 18's micah upshaw shows us how investigators plan to get it solved. 3<micah: what happened in fowler on october 8th, 1976 has lead the benton county coroners office into a 43-year-long investigation. matt: the farmer was opening up his field, it was a cornfield he was opening it up. discovered the box loaded it up into his truck and took it back to his residence where he opened it up and discovered the body of a female.micah: the woman had one gunshot wound to the head.the coroner determined 3the body belonged t 65 year old white woman, standing at about 5 foot 2.she had a radical right side mastectomy, which investigators used as a lead. matt: they thought it might assist in identification of her and through-out the years they've had no luck and worked extremely hard to try to identify her.micah: after several years, several lead follow-ups and several miles traveled, investators decided to close the case, until now.matt: i got an email from a company that works with law enforcement and medical examiners, and coroners throughout the united states called namus and they were enquiring about our jane doe 1976 case to see if we'd ever identified her.micah: current benton county coroner matt rosenbarger teamed up with indianapolis human identification labratory to dig up the woman's remains at sacred heart cemetery.micah stand up: this is where the body was buried 43 years ago. it took 8 hours to dig up and what they found was a body bag and bones.matt: as forensic science has elaborated a little bit better we're hoping that we'll get a better idea that not only a race and potential age range but, you know, the areas of the country where she might have been. micah: in benton county, micah upshaw news 18.> 3 you can help fund their research by donating to the benton county auditor jane doe fund.that information can be found on our website
