WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — While Coach Matt Painter and the men's basketball team are getting ready for Indiana Saturday, Purdue officials are making their own game plan for the expected winter weather.
Senior Associate Athletics Director Tom Schott said the athletics department is monitoring Saturday's expected snowstorm. The latest models show six to eight inches of snow beginning early Saturday morning.
"We encourage fans to watch the weather where they are coming from take some extra time," he said.
Schott said if Indiana can get to West Lafayette, and they expect the team will, the game will be played. Indiana will travel to Purdue Friday, as is customary. He said that both fan and student-athlete safety of both teams is a top priority for Purdue Athletics.
"We want people to be smart about it and not sacrifice anything for the sake of a sporting event even one as big as Purdue-Indiana basketball," he said.
The rival school basketball game has not been completely cancelled in recent history. However it was postponed in February of 2007.
Meterologist Chad Evans confirmed that the Lafayette area had around 17 inches of snow on the ground at that time.
Purdue also is opening the gates to Mackey Arena 30 minutes earlier than normal. Tip-off is set for 2:00 Saturday afternoon, and the gates will open at 12:30 p.m. Premium-seat holders will be allowed inside at Noon.
Schott also said parking lots will open at Noon for the most anticipated game of the year. He is advising fans to use caution and plan on taking extra time to travel to West Lafayette, especially for those coming from out of town.
Campus officials met Thursday afternoon to discuss operational details.

The game is sold out.
Schott said this is a bit of a tripple header for Purdue-IU teams facing off this weekend. The wrestling teams compete at Mackey Arena on Friday and the women's basketball teams will play on Sunday. You can find updates on all the these events on Purdue Athletics' Twitter page @PurdueSports.
