INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (WLFI)-Senate Bill 389 the wetlands bill in passed in the house today. As we previously reported several local Housing associations in Tippecanoe County are opposed to the legislation.

Housing associations say it would give developers the green light to build on wetlands boarding their property in turn bringing their property values down. Both Local Democratic Representatives Chris Campbell and Sheila Klinker voted against the legislation.

However, both local Republican Representatives Sharon Negele and Don Lehe voted in favor of it.

Representative Negele told WLFI in a phone conversation that the legislation isn't perfect but that she feels it protects farmers.

She also said having a task force of experts in place to study the issue made her feel more comfortable about the legislation.

Representative Chris Campbell feels passing the legislation is premature.

You're kind of putting the cart before the horse we are doing the investigation and evaluation of what we should be doing but we are already passing this legislation that is going to allow these projects to start," said Representative Chris Campbell the Democratic Representative for District 26.

The bill passed 58-40 in the house a motion to concur was filed in the Senate. If the Senate approves the amendments to the bill It will head to the governor's desk. To read the bill in full click here.
