WABASH TOWNSHIP, Ind. (WLFI)-The Wabash Township Board met Tuesday evening to discuss its budget. Wabash Township Trustee Jennifer Teising was in attendance but she didn't speak at the meeting. Instead, she sent a statement laying out her plans for the future. She sent that statement in email form at 5:42 PM when the meeting started at 6 PM. The board was hoping that Trustee Teising would answer questions about the Township's overall expenses, but that didn't happen.
"We should be able to look at those and actually get to an agreement as to what the budget will look like and that's why those meetings are important," said Wabash Township Board President Angel Valentín.
In Trustee Teising's written and video statement she announced she would only be participating in three of the eight scheduled budget discussions.
"I will be attending all eight of these board meetings but will have legal counsel and will participate in three," said Wabash Township Trustee Jennifer Teising. "Those dates are August 11th September 7th and September 21st. The budget will be uploaded on September 23."
The statement wasn't played at the meeting. Trustee Teising was in attendance but spent the majority of the meeting in the hallway. After the meeting was over, she said she was disappointed her statement wasn't played on the record.
"That was the intent to have the public statement read into the meeting," said Trustee Teising.
Board President Angel Valentin says all the Trustee needed to do was say she sent the statement and they would have played it.
"If I were present at the meeting if I were in the hypothetical the Trustee I would communicate with the board and say you know my statement is here sorry for it being late or whatnot," said Valentin. "There is a double standard at play."
Trustee Teising has requested that all agenda items and points of discussion for meetings be provided to her 7 business days before the meeting takes place. However, the board has requested an itemized list of expenditures something they say they haven't received, but they hope to have before the next meeting.
"If past behavior indicates future behavior then we are likely to see those on time but we hope that we do," said Valentin.
The next meeting is scheduled for August 11th. The Trustee will be participating in that meeting. To read the Trustee's entire statement click here.
