WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Police are investigating an attempted break-in at a home in West Lafayette, thanks to a flower.
Home surveillance video captures a man Tippecanoe County Sheriff's deputies identify as Gabriel Ruiz. The video shows Ruiz cutting a flower outside a home off SR 26.
Ruiz places it on a table outside the home and that's what made the homeowner check his outdoor surveillance recording that morning.
The video captures two suspects charging their phones and attempting to get inside the home several times. It's unknown if they were doing drugs at the table but that is what the homeowner thinks they were doing.
It appears Ruiz had a knife and he is seen putting on gloves and attempting the enter the side door.
Deputies are still trying to identify the other man in the video.
"That is scary, that is terrifying," said Tippecanoe County resident Crystal Ragan.
The incident happened at 5:42 AM Wednesday.
"Oh my God, that is crazy," said Ragan. "My daughter is up for school at that time of the day."
Because deputies think this incident was random, Ragan hopes her house isn't next.
"I will definitely think twice about letting my kids open the door and let the dog outside in the middle of the night," said Ragan.
With what appears to be a knife in hand, the two make their way to the back of the home in the video.
"They had plugged in their cell phones to the outlet there and were charging their phones and they attempted to open the back door to the home," said Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office Deputy Steven Stonerock.
What they're doing at the table isn't certain, but the homeowner suspects they are doing drugs.
"From the video, I can't tell exactly what they're doing, but it did seem highly suspicious to me," said Stonerock.
The video helped identify one of the suspects as Gabriel Ruiz. He's captured putting on gloves and trying the south entrance. The other suspect has yet to be identified but Ragan is confident it won't take long.
"Everybody knows everybody around here," said Ragan. "I mean, you see a face and somebody is going to be like, 'Oh yes! That's Joe Schmo and I know where he hangs out.'"
Ruiz was arrested Friday and is currently being held at the Tippecanoe County Jail on unrelated charges of intimidation and a threat to commit a felony.
This incident is being sent the prosecutor for review.
You are asked to call the Sheriff's Office if you know anything or recognize the second man in the video.
