LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Many people who care for their elderly parents in nursing homes are having to get creative to visit their loved ones. Many nursing homes are completely restricted from visitors to keep the coronavirus out.
Sharon and Jeff Newell each have a parent in a local nursing home. So Sharon, Jeff, and Jeff's siblings visit their parents through the windows every day. They are able to talk to them on the phone and Sharon is able to video chat with her mom, Artie. She says it is making all the difference to still be able to have contact with her mom.
"I know it helps to go see her through the window and get to talk her a little bit that way because she just lights up to see my face. and I hope that continues you know we don't know how long this is going to last," said Sharon.
The Newell family is having to put their in-person visits on hold for now as they follow the rules of the stay-at-home order.
We plan to talk more with them about how they're coping later in the week.
