We are tracking active weather for the next 24 hours. Today is going to be mild as scattered showers travel over Indiana. The rainfall will become more widespread this afternoon with embedded heavy downpours. There may even be a few rumbles of thunder! Be prepared for heavy rain into the evening commute as highs soar into the mid to upper 50s.
Big changes arrive to the area as an arctic cold front tracks over Indiana. The boundary will travel over the state this evening and allow temperatures to drop quickly behind it. As air temperatures drop near the 32° mark, the rainfall will transition to an icy mix (freezing rain, sleet). Recent forecast models have the transition occurring around midnight EST in the Lafayette area and turning over to all freezing rain near 2 a.m. EST.
There are going to be several hours with temperatures near freezing, which will likely lead to minor ice accumulation. Up to 0.1” of ice may accumulate and may form a glaze of ice on untreated roads. Even a small amount of ice will create difficult travel conditions for the area into Friday morning’s commute.
Once temperatures drop below 32°, the wintry mix will turn into snow showers. The transition period for the snow will begin around 5 a.m. EST in our western counties. Most of the precipitation will turn over to snow showers by 8 a.m. EST.
Scattered snow will continue to fall through Friday afternoon and should exit our eastern counties that evening. An additional 1” to 3” may accumulate on top of the glaze of ice. The highest forecast snow totals are in our southeastern counties.
As this system moves over the area, be prepared for difficult travel conditions and slick roads, especially into Friday morning! Stay tuned for more updates on Weather Blog 18.
