LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The final installment of News 18's winter weather preparedness series gets you ready for winter road conditions. News 18 visited RNR Tire Express in Lafayette to get some tire safety tips.
Store manager Keith Kirts said with icy conditions coming our way it's important to check tires for tread wear. If the tread is too thin, it can impact your stopping distance.
The lifespan of tires is typically ten years.
Keeping an eye on your tire pressure is also important. If tires aren't filled with air properly they can wear unevenly.
But, Kirts said, maybe something other than air should be filling your tires.
"We do fill our tires with nitrogen [at RNR Tire Express]," he told News 18. "What we have found is nitrogen is a better source than just air because it doesn't fluctuate as much with the change in temperatures."
He said using nitrogen can give tires up to 25 percent longer tread life.
The RNR location on Sagamore Parkway also has a free air pump available to anyone 24-7.
"It just really comes down to being vigilant about periodically stopping and checking your tire pressures throughout the year," Kirts said. "But when we get into the real cold weather, real hot weather, it does have a tendency to affect tire pressures."
