LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The Tippecanoe County Historical Association is educating area fourth-graders about local African-American history.

On Friday, it hosted a diversity program at Long Center in Lafayette by bringing in African-American historians from Ireland, Louisiana, and Virginia.

Performers educated students on the underground railroad and the influence of African music.
Executive Director of the Tippecanoe County Historical Association, Craig Hadley, says the fourth-grade kids connect with these type of cultural events.

“Especially in the times that we live in we want people to know that nobody's history is forgotten. And that so too often there's a lot of ethnicities and cultures whose history is not really remembered anymore,” said Craig Hadley.

He continues, “it's not just dry history, we're bringing history to life for these fourth graders, and they get excited about it. And it's not just lecturing to the kids, it's interactive, they participate. And that's what we want, we want to excite their minds so they learn.”

Mayor Tony Roswarski and the City of Lafayette sponsored the program this year. It is a pilot program, but Hadley hopes to make it a mainstay on a yearly basis.
