TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) -- Two Tippecanoe School Corporation teachers are being rewarded for a job well done. Mayflower Mill Elementary Kindergarten teacher Claire Brown and McCutcheon High School English teacher Kelly Carpenter have just been named TSC's 'Teachers of the Year.'
This year's nomination period is the first one to happen under a full school year in the Covid-19 pandemic. Both teachers experienced having to shift their lessons to e-Learning and in-person under the school's Covid-safety guidelines.
Brown embraced her time of e-Learning by hosting interactive lessons on Facebook Live, which ended up reaching people all over the nation. She said she's really spent this school year finding unique ways to combine playtime and learning for her students.
Carpenter has also been working to make learning more fun for her freshman and senior students. She's incorporated writing assignments on the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Hamilton, where students analyze the play and music. And she also lets students role-play other literature characters they're learning about.
"I'm excited to continue doing that and hopefully, this award will give me the opportunity to spread that to encourage others to add that back in," said Brown.
"We've assigned roles and the kids have name tags for each character and they like to stand up," said Carpenter. "It's really amazing to know that people are paying attention to what we're doing when they're not even in our classrooms."
Brown has been a teacher with TSC for 14 years. But her journey with the school system starts much earlier as she grew up in Tippecanoe County and attended TSC schools. Carpenter is also a Tippecanoe County native who attended school through the Lafayette School Corporation. She's been a teacher at TSC for 22 years.
Both are honored to know their teaching methods are making an impact.
"I was excited but I was also surprised because we're not used to that. It was kind of -- I was taken back just, 'What? I get an award for doing something I love,'" said Brown.
"I'm so honored and humbled and excited," said Carpenter. "Teachers, we come to our jobs every day and we just love our jobs, we teach that's what we do."
These teachers are first nominated by other teachers then TSC administrators and the former Teacher of the Year vote on who wins out of all the nominees.
These teachers are now in the running to become 'Indiana Teacher of the Year.' Unfortunately, all ceremonies are still canceled due to Covid-19. But both teachers are expected to receive a plaque in the next coming weeks.
