WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Construction for the West Lafayette Wellness and Aquatics Center is coming along.

West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis gave us a tour Monday afternoon. The new facility is providing all the amenities you'd find in recreational centers today.

“We have had a ton of people express interest in being members and that's kind of sort of for us when you talk about cash flow that's what it's all about,” said Dennis.

This $31 million project took lots of research from the community. First finding out what the people want.

“We did a lot of sensing sessions, we talked to our community, we had a lot of interaction with our community to find out what would make us, what is missing, what can we do best and one of the top things was a recreation center,” said Dennis.

From there the question became what does that look like?

“We got more specific, what do you want in there? A water feature obviously, some sort of open areas to where they can do different things yoga, or some sort of specialized class, dance class, something of that nature.” Dennis. “Society is now driving the agenda on what people want to do with their spare time and obviously they want to stay fit, they want to be healthy and they want to interact with each other and this is going to accommodate all those things.”

The project is set for completion in late December.
