WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)- Parents in West Lafayette want a choice for their children’s' education when schools open up in the fall.
"What's really driven me through this whole process is that it's really important to me for everyone's voice to be heard," said Brady Kalb who has two kids that attend West Lafayette Community School Corporation.
Yue Yin has three children who attend schools in the West Lafayette Community School Corporation. Yue put together a survey to find out the preferred option for parents and 520 of them took it. Results showed 32 percent prefer on-site learning, 20 percent are interested in a hybrid option and 48 percent want an e-learning option.
"Just let people choose. Let parents choose, let teachers choose,” said Yue Yin who has three kids that attend WLCSC. “They already all have different concerns and factors that way they will be responsible for whatever choice they make."
West Lafayette Community School Corporation Superintendent Rocky Killion says they are working on adding an e-learning option.
"We need data to be able to determine how many people we need for on-site, instruction,” said superintendent Killion. “We need data to determine how many staff members we would need with e-learning and I would just ask for everyone’s patience as we gather that data."
The school district plans to survey parents when they register their children for school.
"Doing it during student registration will provide us the most accurate response so we can make the proper staffing scheduled decisions," added Killion.
Which the district hopes will lead to what parents are asking for.
"I think next week we will be able to announce a full-time e-learning option and a full time on-site instructional option," added Killion.
Killion says the hardest part of offering an online option is figuring out how staffing will work. He says they want to do their own survey to make sure the data is accurate. Registration for West Lafayette Schools started online today. To read the results of Yue Yin's survey click here.
