Thanksgiving break begins for Purdue students

Unlike last year, Purdue University is operating on a normal holiday schedule. Purdue University President, Mitch Daniels, is reflecting back on how the 2021 fall semester has been compared to last year.

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — The 2021 Thanksgiving Break is underway at Purdue University.

Purdue University President, Mitch Daniels, is proud of how things are going on campus.

"Last year was so touch-and-go literally every single day," said Daniels. "This year so far everything COVID related has been under great control."

As Thanksgiving Break gets underway, he says it's nice to be back on a regular holiday schedule.

"Obviously this year has been much more comfortable for everyone," said Daniels. "I've really been enjoying watching how much everyone here students, faculty and staff are enjoying themselves."

As News 18 previously reported, last year as a COVID-19 precaution students left campus for Thanksgiving break and completed the rest of the semester online. Students, faculty and staff didn't arrive back on campus until the spring semester began.

"This year we're back to normal," said Daniels. "We want to be careful as we come back together to keep on being cautious in our behavior and keep on testing those who are unvaccinated."

Looking back at last year, Daniels is proud to see how things have changed.

"We're so eager of course to relax the inconveniences that we still have in place," said Daniels. "But we again are just trying to be as careful as the circumstances warrant."

As for the upcoming 2021 Winter Break, Daniels says the University could possibly change the campus-wide mask mandate.

"We have announced that it's our intention to relax the indoor masking mandate after we get back," said Daniels. "Not immediately because people will have spread out to all four point of the compass and we want to take the first about three weeks just to make sure we still have things well under control."

Assuming things are under control when students arrive back on-campus in 2022, Daniels said the change will take effect.

"On the First of February the mask mandate will go away everywhere but in our classrooms."

Looking back at last year, Daniels is proud of things are going.

"Last year was something to be proud of," said Daniels. "But this year is one to enjoy."
