WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Matt Painter has another opening on his coaching staff.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hired Purdue assistant Steve Lutz as its new head coach on Tuesday.
Lutz spent four seasons at Purdue. He mainly oversaw the Boilermakers' defense.
Lutz’s defense was one of the best in America during the 2019-20 season. It ranked 11th nationally in defensive efficiency, matching Purdue’s best defensive ranking since the 2010-11 season.
Prior to arriving in West Lafayette, Lutz worked as an assistant at Creighton for seven seasons.
The San Antonio native will now return to his home state and lead his first college program.
Lutz has his work cut out for him.
Lutz will inherit an Islanders' program which finished 5-19 overall and 2-13 in Southland Conference play in 2020.
With Lutz's departure, Painter's staff will look different in 2021.
Micah Shrewsberry left to become the head coach at Penn State following the end of last season.
