6 neighbors recognized for saving a life

A team of local heroes is being recognized for lifesaving efforts.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A team of local heroes is being recognized for lifesaving efforts.

Six people were presented citations at Wednesday's meeting of the Board of Directors of Lafayette Urban Ministry.

On Jan. 2, a LUM staff member noticed a shelter guest laying in a snow bank unresponsive. It was -19 degrees outside that night.

LUM's shelter director called 911 immediately, and help showed up within minutes.

At the meeting, LUM Executive Director Joe Micon said the person would have died without their efforts.

LUM Shelter Director David Heckert says they usually don't get recognized for the work they do.

"We do this work because we love people," Heckert said. "All of my staff has a profound respect for people and wants to see them get back on their feet and get back to a better situation than being homeless." 

Among the recipients were two Lafayette Police Department officers, two Tippecanoe Emergency Ambulance Service EMTs and two employees at LUM's shelter.
