TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - A new grant from the Office of Justice Programs is allowing the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office to add two new school resource officers.
Currently, the Sheriff's Office has 3 School Resource Officers serving the Tippecanoe School Corporation.
They cover all 19 TSC schools.
According to Sheriff Bob Goldsmith, TSC would like to assign the new officers to McCutcheon and Harrison High Schools.
Goldsmith said this helps students build a stronger bond with local law enforcement.
"It'd be nice to have that constant face, that officer, in each high school so that relationship can be built between the students and the officer and the staff and the officer as well," said Goldsmith. "There is a lot of conversations going on about police and citizens and bridging the gap with communication, relations and building relationships. And this is the way to do that with our youth."
Goldsmith said a meeting needs to be held with TSC before determining where the new officers will be located.
Goldsmith would like to have the positions filled by the start of the new school year.
