WEST LAFAYETT, Ind. (WLFI) — Lane Custer has been a coach in West Lafayette's Track & Field program for 41 consecutive years. Through his long tenure with the Red Devils, he said that he's never seen anything like this year's circumstanses. Custer admires his senior group for keeping a positive mindset in the face of adversity.
"Relentless" is the word coach Custer used to describe the 26 total seniors on their 2020 Boys and Girls Track & Field Roster. Several Red Devils showed promise in the indoor season, including Alaina Omonode, who is planning to throw Shot Put in college at Grand Valley State University. Custer said several more West Siders are choosing between colleges right now, and may go onto compete at the next level.
Coach Custer said this group left their mark on the program, and on the coaching staff as well.
"What kids don't understand a lot is that coaches get inspiration from kids just as much as the other way around," said Custer. "There's no doubt about their abilities in school, and they're all going to be successful in life."
