Senior Spotlight: Lafayette Jeff Softball

Lafayette Jeff Softball featured four seniors in the 2020 graduating class.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Lafayette Jeff Softball head coach Tanya Koeppen only needed one word to describe this year’s senior bunch. “Awesome.”

The 2020 Lady Broncho featured four seniors, including returning team MVP Ashlynn McTaggertt. Lafayette Jeff has had a tumultuous decade, but ended 2019 with their first winning season in 8 years. That momentum could have had a serious impact on the 2020 season.

Ashlynn McTaggert was a utility player who plans on continuing her softball career at Danville Area Community college in Illinois. McTaggertt played every position for the Lady Bronchos except pitcher. She plans to study management at DACC.

Maddie McCoy was a pitcher and an outfielder for Jeff, earning a 2.40 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 2019. She plans on attending Purdue University this fall to study nursing

Tess White played at 1st and 3rd base. White is headed to Muncie to study elementary education at Ball State.

Kattey Pass played at 1st and 3rd, adding minutes on Jeff’s Basketball and Soccer teams well. Pass plans to attend Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida to study Marine Biology.

Koeppen told WLFI she’s going to miss this bunch especially, because of how well they got along with one another.

“This group of kids just really likes each other,” said Koeppen earlier this week. “If they like each other they lead by example and they’re fun to be around.”

Koeppen says this group will be tough to replace, but there is still a silver lining.

“Basically I’m getting rid of a starting pitcher, my starting corners, and my starting shortstop,” said Koeppen. “Thankfully we have a lot of young talent coming our way.”
