TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — A Tippecanoe County family is honoring their son who died in a car accident in May.
The Anders Family has created a scholarship fund.

The scholarship is currently available to high school seniors on the McCutcheon boys golf team. The Anders family hopes to expand the scholarship to the girls team as well in the near future. Their late son, Evan, was an avid golfer and a member on the McCutcheon team. They hope this scholarship fund will help keep his memory alive.

Evan Anders was a McCutcheon High School Sophomore when he was killed in a crash on U.S. 52 in May.

His father, Boyd Anders, couldn't drive for a period of time after the shock of the accident. He enlisted his friend Colten Bennett to help him get around. During their car ride conversations Bennett hatched the idea for a scholarship in Evan's honor.

"I've known Boyd for 10 years," Bennett said. "And to see their family go through that was really tragic and I just wanted to help out in any way I could ... and usually when something like this happens, like, you always say 'Hey, is there anything you need?' and they always say, usually no, or they just talk to you. And I just felt like this would be a better way."

During his life Evan had an impact on his golf teammates and his coach.

"He's the type of kid that you don't want to forget," his coach Josh Frauhiger said. "I think the great thing about golf is that there are memories on the golf course that you make especially with your friends and with Evan, so I think some of that times it brought memories back to the kids which were great memories so that they could remember him in a positive light."

The family has organized events like a golf outing and car show to raise funds for the scholarship. They are grateful to the community for their support.

"Lots of support, it was overwhelming," Boyd told News 18. "No way I dreamed there would be a response like that."

With this scholarship Evan Anders' love of golf and his teammates will live on through those who loved him.

"He was my best friend, I miss him greatly," Boyd said. "And ... that's my main goal is just keep his memory alive."
