WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) -- The Tapawingo Park ice-skating rink has opened for the season. Weather permitting, the rink has always opened the day after Thanksgiving.
This year, opening day brought in nearly 20 more skaters than last year. With the winter season bringing unpredictable weather, Taylor Kolo, a manager at the rink said the condition of the ice is what determines if they'll be open.
She said the ice held up well for opening weekend considering the high volume of skaters and the warmer weather. Crews started preparing the ice last week.
“Laying down the ice, then a layer of white reflective paint and then more ice so about a week ago we had a crew in here doing that, and now we've got our ice up to a good level of thickness and it's safe to skate on.,” said Kolo.
She said keeping track of the ice's condition is very important.
“We look at the weather beforehand and we also go ahead and are just keeping track of the condition of the ice because it is the ice condition itself, more so than the weather, that really matters to whether or not we're able to open,” said Kolo.
The ice-skating rink will be open from now until early March.
