LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The River City Community Center in Lafayette is officially open to the public.
On Saturday, hundreds of people came out to celebrate and tour the new facility.
“The River City Community Center is a multi-functioning facility that has different rooms for all different types of people,” said Center Director Terry Gilbert.
Gilbert calls the center an extension of River City Church. It offers a space for everything from classrooms to conferences, banquets, and weddings.
“There's just something that happens when you open a community center,” said Gilbert. “Those barriers that may exist when people are coming into a church, they start to become removed.”
Gilbert hopes this facility helps transform lives. He said the key is building relationships.
“We think relationships are how things matter, how things take that next step,” said Gilbert. “We have volunteers, myself here as a director, we want to open ourselves to the community.”
For many community members who attended the grand opening, they say they’re looking forward to having this new resource so close to home.
The River City Church on Old US 231 is celebrating the opening of a new community center.
The River City Community Center will provide multiple services for those in the community.
A few of the features the center will offer include four conference rooms, an auditorium, and a banquet hall able to host 600 people. There will also be a large play area connected to the STEAM Academy, which is expanding to 18 classrooms.
A cafe will also call the center home, opening on June 10th.
Center Director, Terry Gilbert, said he looks forward to the versatility of the center and its many services.
“We can go from one day having a reception for a wedding, the next day having a training or a seminar to the next day hosting our Sunday night youth services for our student ministries here.” Said Gilbert.
There will be an open house tomorrow from 11 a.n to 2 p.m where the public will be invited to tour the new center.
