TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Crews are finishing work on the first phase of renovations to the old YMCA building, which will become the Tippecanoe County Central Offices.
The second phase of construction on the building, located on South 18th St. next to the fairgrounds, is slated to start and finish next year.
The first phase included work to the exterior of the building, including new windows, paint and an HVAC system.
"But it's essentially gutted on the inside," says Tippecanoe County Commissioner Tom Murtaugh.
The second phase will include renovations to the inside of the building, such as new flooring and plumbing. County commissioners are now considering bids for the second phase.
"That will take place next year and by the end of the year, then, hopefully we'll have that building completely done and then the health department and the extension office will be relocated into that facility," Murtaugh says.
As News 18 previously reported, the county is investing about $2 million in the renovation.
The building has been vacant for about two years since the Lafayette Family YMCA's new building opened on Creasy Lane.
