WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Purdue's George Karlaftis has been named to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.
The Maxwell Football Club announced the honorees on Monday. Karlaftis is one of just 11 sophomores on the list.
Karlaftis, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive end from West Lafayette, was a second-team All-Big Ten selection and a first-team Associated Press Freshman All-American last season. He finished third on the Boilermakers with 54 total tackles, while leading the team with 17.0 tackles for loss and tying for first with 7.5 sacks.
Karlaftis was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List given to the college football defensive IMPACT player of the year.
IMPACT an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community, and Tenacity.
