PURDUE UNIVERSITY (WLFI)— The Purdue Board of Trustees approved the naming of the Sports Engineering Center in the College of Engineering. The center will now be called Ray Ewry Sports Engineering Center in the College of Engineering.
Ray Ewry is a Lafayette native who was an American track and field athlete. He won ten Olympic medals and was also an engineering major, graduating from Purdue in 1894.
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Diversity, Jay Akridge said this is a great way to honor local icons.
"Here's a person who is a Purdue graduate and happened to be a mechanical engineer," said Akridge. "A student who struggled with health issues as a young person and then was incredibly accomplished as an Olympic athlete."
Ewry held the Olympic Games record for most gold medals won for more than 100 years.
