WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Protect Purdue Implementation Team is expanding its efforts to limit the spread of the coronavirus this upcoming semester.
Purdue University announced it will create the Protect Purdue Health Center Monday morning. It will serve as as the main point of contact for COVID-19 sampling, testing and quarantining on campus.
"We want people to really start at that point of the Protect Purdue Health Center so that we just have a good understanding of what's going on in the community," said Protect Purdue Implementation Team Leader David Broecker.
Purdue's new health center will be the next step in preventing the spread of the coronavirus as students and faculty return to campus this fall.
"What we are wanting to do with the Protect Purdue Health Center is to create a single point of contact for that entire community as it relates to anything related to COVID," said Broecker
The center will mostly serve as a virtual call center, but an in person location is planned near the Center for Healthy Living.
According to Broecker, the center will coordinate the overall work flow and COVID related case management.
"We're going to have a series of case managers who basically will be screening calls. These will be people predominantly with nursing backgrounds and then including contact tracing peoples," said Broecker.
Broecker said he wants the service to be something everyone on campus can access.
"We set up the Protect Purdue Health Center is for people to feel comfortable about calling in and just basically saying, "hey this is what is happening, what do you think?"," said Broecker.
Broecker said he hopes the center will be an added benefit on campus.
"If you think you have symptoms don't come to work, don't go to class. Call the Protect Purdue Health Center," said Broecker.
Broecker said the health center is expected to be fully operational in time for the start of the Fall semester.
Purdue is also setting aside up to 400 beds for a fully serviced quarantine area in the Purdue Village West area.
