FOUNTAIN COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — One person is dead following a five-vehicle crash in Fountain County. It happened around 6 p.m. Monday evening on State Road 28 near County Road 725E.
Indiana State Police released the name of the victim Tuesday afternoon. Diana Hanthorne, 59, of Williamsport was in the Ford Edge which caught fire. She was the only person in the car.
News 18 has learned the crash started when a westbound driver in a black 2015 Dodge Durango was waiting to turn left into a driveway. That's when a 2016 silver Chevrolet Equinox coming from behind rear-ended the stopped Durango.
A third driver in a black 2020 Ford Edge swerved from the westbound lane to the eastbound lane in an attempt to avoid the wreck and hit a white 2019 Ford F-150 pulling a trailer head-on.
Another eastbound driver in a gray Mazda 3 was unable to stop in time, therefore hitting the trailer.
Four people were taken to an area hospital. One of the people involved in the crash later died.
State Road 28 was closed in both directions between State Road 341 and County Road 725E around 4 hours while crews cleaned up the area.
ISP also released the names of the other people involved in the crash. They were each the lone occupants of their vehicles. Their specific injuries are unknown at this time.
