WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis confirmed Friday that Fresh Thyme Farmers Market will move into the previous Marsh Supermarket on the corner of Salisbury and Navajo streets.

As News 18 previously reported, Marsh filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in May. Both the Teal Road location in Lafayette and West Lafayette locations closed in July.

According to its website, Fresh Thyme focuses on fresh, healthy, natural and organic foods. It "boasts an extensive produce department with organic and local fruits and vegetables, a natural meat department, healthy deli foods to go, bakery goods, 400 bulk food bins, dairy and frozen, and health supplement products."

Construction will begin Monday and the store is set to open in late spring or early summer of 2019. The store has signed a 10-year lease on the site.

"This is big for West Lafayette," said Mayor John Dennis in an exclusive interview with WLFI Friday morning. "With this addition, it is really going to neaten up that corner of Navajo and Salisbury. It is going to be visually enhancing and the products they provide will really meet the needs of our citizens."

Fresh Thyme will occupy 32,000 square feet of the 40,000 square feet Marsh filled. The remaining 8,000 feet will be for lease. There's no word yet on what will take over the other space.

Rumors have been swirling since an alcohol permit was posted on the building window earlier this week with the Fresh Thyme name.

Dennis said he hopes this is the first move of many to fill vacant storefronts along Sagamore Parkway in West Lafayette.

There were other companies interested in moving into the space, including a group wanting to put in a gun range.

"I think a Fresh Thyme is definitely preferable"

This will be the second Fresh Thyme in Tippecanoe County. There is a location in Lafayette on Creasy Lane.

Statement from Chris Sherrell. Fresh Thyme President and CEO:
"We are always actively looking for new locations as part of our mission to make healthy, organic and natural food more affordable and obtainable for everyone. We strategically place our stores in areas where we know the consumers are on a health journey, no matter what that may be. Our current Lafayette location at 220 S. Creasy Lane has performed well over the last three years and we're excited to bring a second store into the area and serve more West Lafayette residents.”

News 18 has had viewers ask when the Needler's Fresh Market will be opening the old March on Teal Road in Lafayette. We reached out to the company, but have yet to hear back.
