BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A deputy with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office has been shot and is not going to survive the shooting.

Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen says Deputy Jacob Pickett will not survive the shooting and that his organs are being donated. Nielsen made the announcement Friday afternoon.

“Today, the thin blue line was shattered,” Nielsen said. “Deputy Jacob Pickett, a 5-year-veteran of the Boone’s County Sheriff’s Department was shot.”

Pickett was first taken to Witham Hospital, then later transferred to St. Vincent Indianapolis by medical helicopter. He his survived by his mother and father, his wife Jen and their two sons.

“Jake continues to give life after death, by being an organ donor,” Nielsen said.

Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter said Pickett was shot in the head.

Pickett, 30, was an officer in Tipton for two years and a Boone County deputy for three. He was a jailer in Marion County from 2010 to 2013. He was the K-9 team lead and worked with the criminal interdiction unit. He worked with K-9 Brick, a full utility dog that had been with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office for more than two years.

Pickett is a Brownsburg native and graduated from Brownsburg High School in 2002.

The last person to die in the line of duty that worked in the Boone County Sheriff’s Office was Sheriff John Pepper in 1935. He died in a car crash on his way to a call.

What happened Friday morning

According to Indiana State Police, Lebanon police were serving a search warrant on Yates Street around 8:30 Friday morning on a female suspect. While there, officers spotted John Baldwin Jr., who was known to have an outstanding warrant. He was ordered to stop but he got into a silver Ford Focus and fled the scene with two other people.

That turned into a chase, at which point a Boone County Sheriff’s deputy joined. Around 9:39 a.m., the vehicle stopped on Indian Springs Drive, where a foot chase took place. Shots were fired, striking the deputy and one suspect. Another suspect took off in a car and was taken into custody on I-65 near State Road 32.

The man that was shot was identified as 21-year-old Anthony Baumgardt of Lebanon. He is listed in stable condition at St. Vincent. He has been identified as the man who shot Pickett.

A father and son duo, 55-year-old John Baldwin Sr. and 28-year-old John Baldwin Jr., were also taken into custody. Baldwin Jr. was located on I-65 after taking off in the Ford Focus. Baldwin Sr. was located after fleeing on foot.

Baldwin Sr. is no stranger to Boone County law enforcement. He was charged with driving while suspended in June of 2001 and again in April of 2008. He was also charged with driving without a valid license in November 2014. He was charged with battery resulting in bodily injury in December 2003. Most recently, he faced two theft charges in July 2017.

A witness did say that two suspects were driving recklessly while being pursued by police.

Lebanon Community School Corporation schools and support facilities were placed on lockdown and lockout.

All Boone County government offices are closed for the day.

Authorities speak on the investigation

Also on Friday afternoon, Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter spoke.

“There’s no reason for people to live in fear,” Carter said. “We believe we have all three people involved in this and there is no reason to be concerned.”

Boone County deputies are currently grieving at the Boone County Fairgrounds.
