Tippecanoe County will not be reinstating a mask mandate at this time despite an overall increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the county.
The issue was discussed during a news conference Wednesday where health officials said the daily number of new cases has quadrupled in the last month. Hospitalizations are also up at both hospitals with both hospitals say the large majority of hospitalizations are unvaccinated people.
Even though there is no mask mandate, the health department is strongly encouraging masks indoors. The decision to reissue a mask mandate is up to county commissioners.
"It's probably not the right point to move forward with a community mandate, but I think the message today was very, very clear in that we need folks to get vaccinated," said Tom Murtaugh, Tippecanoe County Commissioner.
