No. 19 Purdue beats Xavier, Lipscomb, improves to 7-0

The No. 19 Purdue volleyball team could not be stopped offensively as the Boilermakers defeated both Xavier (3-1: 25-17, 26-28, 25-13, 25-16) and Lipscomb (3-0: 25-23, 25-18, 25-12) on the opening day of the Stacey Clark Classic on Friday at Holloway Gymnasium.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Purdue Sports) – The No. 19 Purdue volleyball team could not be stopped offensively as the Boilermakers defeated both Xavier (3-1: 25-17, 26-28, 25-13, 25-16) and Lipscomb (3-0: 25-23, 25-18, 25-12) on the opening day of the Stacey Clark Classic on Friday at Holloway Gymnasium.

Senior Sherridan Atkinson came out firing on all cylinders as the right side hitter put down 30 kills for 4.29 kills per set. Freshman Grace Cleveland was not far behind with 20 kills and a .333 hitting clip. Redshirt freshman Hayley Bush registered a team-high .600 hitting percentage with nine kills and zero errors. As a team, Purdue totaled 102 kills in the two matches.

Bush aided the Purdue offense with 84 assists on the day, including a career-best 54 assists against Xavier. The Boilermaker setter also added 12 digs and two blocks.

Defensively, senior Brooke Peters rounded out the day with a pair of double-digit performances by adding 22 digs against Xavier and 11 versus Lipscomb. Sophomores Julianna Reisinger and Jena Otec and freshman Marissa Hornung each posted two services aces on the day.

The Boilermakers (7-0) used a strong defensive performance in the first match against Xavier (1-5) to pick up the victory with the team totaling 12.0 blocks. Powered by four Cleveland putaways, Purdue claimed the opening set, 25-17, but lost the second set 28-26. Regrouped, the Boilermakers dominated the next two sets, limiting the Musketeers to single-digit kills in the final frames. Redshirt junior Shavona Cuttino and sophomore Caitlyn Newton put up big stops at the net with a team-best 5.0 blocks apiece.

Purdue took the momentum into the final match of the day against Lipscomb (3-4) as eight Boilermakers tallied at least one kill to go along with 38 team digs and 4.0 blocks. The teams tied the score seven times to open the match, but a 4-0 Boilermaker run paved the way for a Purdue sweep. The home squad closed the match tallying a .632 hitting clip while restricting Lipscomb to a .154 mark.

The Boilermakers will wrap-up action at the Stacey Clark Classic by taking on Louisville at 7:30 p.m. Xavier and Lipscomb will open the day with a match at 5 p.m. Live stats and a free live audio broadcast will be available at purduesports.com.
