MADISON, Wisc. (Purdue Sports) — The No. 15 Purdue volleyball team faltered against No. 13 Wisconsin in three sets on Friday night inside the Wisconsin Field House.
Junior Caitlyn Newton led the match with 13 kills, while redshirt sophomore Hayley Bush notched a match-best 33 assists, and sophomore Marissa Hornung paced the Boilermakers with 12 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (22-25) | Newton, senior Blake Mohler and sophomore Grace Cleveland opened up the first set with quick kills as Purdue took a 4-0 lead. Purdue extended its advantage to 11-7, before Wisconsin responded with a 4-0 run of its own to tie the set at 11. Knotting the score five more times, the conference foes found themselves knotted at 21, before a trio of Boilermaker miscues gave the set to the Badgers. The frame saw both teams registered 12 kills, while Purdue tallied 21 digs to Wisconsin's 18.
SET 2 (27-29) | Purdue and Wisconsin traded points in the second set with kills by Newton, Mohler and Cleveland. An ace from Hornung tied the set at eight, before two more kills from Mohler gave Purdue its first lead of the frame. Utilizing small runs, Wisconsin tied the score at 21 and held on to a small lead until its 24th point. With the help of an ace from sophomore Jael Johnson and kills from Mohler and Newton, Purdue knotted the score at 27. However, at a pair of kills from Dana Rettke ultimately gifted the Badgers the second set victory.
SET 3 (25-15) | The Boilermakers got off on the wrong foot in the third set, giving up a 7-1 run to start the frame. Plagued by nine attack errors and a -.086 hitting percentage, Purdue would not find the equalizer, sealing the sweep for Wisconsin. The Badgers delivered 13 kills on a .242 hitting percentage in the final frame.
The Boilermakers continue their conference trip at No.7 Minnesota on Saturday. First serve is slated for 8 p.m. ET with the match broadcasting on the Big Ten Network.
