LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A warrant was served Monday in relation to a two-year Lafayette killing investigation, LPD confirms.
Lafayette police arrested Adam Worthington, 22, on Creekview Court around 7 p.m. Officers said Worthington lives on the road and was found walking on the street.
Prosecutors said Worthington was the third man who broke into 52-year-old John Byler's Center Street apartment in January 2017. Byler was later found dead.
Worthington is facing charges of burglary, attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, armed robbery, theft, and attempted theft.
Wesley Hampton, 41, and Aarron Vance, 37, were arrested for the crime in 2017 on preliminary charges of murder. In September, Vance pleaded guilty to burglary. Court documents show all other charges will be dropped at his sentencing.
According to court documents, on Jan. 16, 2017 Worthington, Vance and Hampton were masked and pushed their way into Byler's apartment demanding drugs and money. Court documents say two men then entered a bedroom. One of them shot Byler after he was found swinging a hatchet, prosecutors said. The suspects then fled the scene.
As we previously reported, Byler was later pronounced dead at a Lafayette hospital. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
Court documents state Hampton, who was wanted on an arrest warrant, was picked up the same night as the crime. He told police he had a gun inside his vehicle, and officers recovered a revolver under the driver's seat.
Hampton said Worthington had contacted him about robbing a dealer, according to court documents.
Vance was located by authorities later that week. He admitted to police that the three men went to the Center Street apartment to get some spice. Vance told police while inside an altercation had taken place. He said during the fight, Hampton shot Byler.
All three men are currently in the Tippecanoe County Jail.
