WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind (WLFI) - A new device in the form of a sticker may soon lower the costs to monitor our personal health.
Researchers at Purdue's Flexilab are creating the device. "We are talking about a technology that's as inexpensive as the conventional bandages that you put an the store," said Associate Professor of Industrial and Biomedical Engineering Ramses Martinez.
The stickers are created using thin paper. Purdue Martinez helped develop the device. He believes the cheaper production costs of paper based devices will allow for more people to access the technology. "Many people have diseases that are continuously running that need to be monitored at a low cost," said Martinez.
Production costs only 6 six cents per sticker.
The stickers are fitted with electrodes that measure magnetic changes in our bodies to keep track of data like heart rate and blood pressure. This information is relayed through a wireless chip to our phone. Users will be able to receive vital information on the go. With mobile access and low production costs, Martinez believes the stickers will save users money. "They will not have to go to the hospital every now and then or have nurses come into their homes," said Martinez.
Professor Martinez hopes to take the technology even further by bringing it to athletes. "They need to know how much oxygen is in their bodies and how much they can push their bodies," added Martinez. With the sticker's thin nature, it won't limit the athletes mobility.
