LAFAYETTE, Ind (WLFI) — A new Low-Cost Spay Neuter Clinic is open for business in the Greater Lafayette Area. It's located on Braddock Drive on the south side of Lafayette.

"We are a high volume, low cost, high quality, spay-neuter clinic,” said Founder of Low-Cost Spay Neuter Clinic Tammy Sollenberger.

With over three locations in the state of Indiana, Sollenberger realizes the need for a low-cost clinic.

"You have a large population and 68 percent of that population has pets," said Sollenberger. "Forty-two percent of that 68 percent has multiple pets."

Sollenberger said there are over 72,000 animals in Tippecanoe County, with even more strays in the area. Many of the shelters are packed.

West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis said this problem doesn’t exist in just one area.

“We do have problems with strays on both sides of the river,” said Dennis. “We do have problems of cats and dogs that are running feral."

That's why city leaders in West Lafayette and Lafayette are doing what they can to lower that number.

"Having a spay and neuter clinic here in the center of Tippecanoe County really helps us with that problem,” said Dennis.

The clinic opened Feb. 19. Veterinarian Lee Robinson said on a scale from 1 to 10, the stray animal population is pretty bad.

"I would put it at a 9 or a 10,” said Robinson. “There are a lot of animals out there that need homes. The shelters are at capacity. That doesn't even count the animals that are living a stray."

In just one day Dr. Robinson performed more than 50 treatments on stray animals alone.

Having this Low-Cost clinic in Tippecanoe County will do more than just lower cost for pet owners.

"I think that people will understand that there's a way to try to do something,” said Dennis. “To try and prevent an excessive amount of strays running around in our community and creating problems for not just our citizens, but for the quality of life we have here."

Sollenberger says, statistically, spay neuter clinics help reduce the number of stray, and animals in the shelter within three years.

She hopes to bring that number down for the Greater Lafayette area. To find out more about Low-Cost Spay and Neuter, including pricing and hours of operation you can do so here.
