FOWLER, Ind. (WLFI) — Two sisters have partnered to open up a cafe in Benton County. This comes after seeing a need for more amenities in the community.
“We just decided this is something our community needs,” said Michel Iliff. “Me and my sister both love coffee and we both just made it ourselves and visited different coffee shops over the years and the closest coffee shop to us is about 30-minutes away.”
Michel and Kassy Iliff grew up in and around the Fowler area. That 30-minute distance got the sisters thinking, why should we travel when we could bring a cafe here.
“We found this amazing building in the perfect location and we're like let's do this,” said Michel. “Let's do this together, that way we can make it the best that it can be.”
Sun Dog Cafe is located in downtown Fowler across from the Fowler Theater. These sisters see the cafe not only attracting local customers but travelers as well.
“We have two major highways, you can stop in real quick to grab a cup of coffee for on your way,” said Kassy. “And I think it's a great place to start out visiting our town too, we have so many shops here, so many amazing things to check out and just cause we're a small town, doesn't mean that we don't have those same amenities now,” added Michel.
Some other amenities include the Chocolate Shop ice-cream stand and 4 Pet's Sake pet grooming service, which the sisters own individually.
“In the last five years there have been, six or seven new businesses opening Benton County and for us personally being able to account for three of those, you know, there are so many amazing people that love this community just as much as we do,” said Michel.
The sisters say they don't need a big city to have a successful business.
“I couldn't imagine doing it anyplace else, I love our community, I love the people here and everybody is just so supportive and welcoming,” said Michel.
The cafe is officially open on Monday, Jan. 20. The hours of operation are from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to various coffee options, the menu items include paninis, wraps, and salads. According to Kassy, the cafe only uses fresh ingredients for its food options. They plan to add additional drinks like teas and smoothies in the future.
