LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - New technology within the the Lafayette Fire Department could keep drivers and firefighters safe.

It was announced Tuesday that the Lafayette Fire Department has partnered with HAAS Alert. HAAS is an emergency alert service that informs drivers when emergency vehicles are approaching.

"We are acting more like a light switch detector on the vehicle itself," said Jeremy Agulnek who works for HAAS. "So when those lights switch on we're immediately getting that signal and able to communicate that to nearby drivers in a matter of seconds."

Chief Deputy of LFD Steve Butram is the one who thought of bringing the technology to Lafayette. He says with the added lane on Interstate 65 this could help with emergency situations.

"Now they have another lane to protect or to block so if people get this information before they get there, maybe they'll detour or they'll slow down and use caution as they proceed through the accident," said Butram.

All you have to do is download the free Waze app on your phone. Once set up, the technology can send you a notification on your phone or bluetooth screen in your car when an emergency vehicle is approaching.

Agulnek is hoping other departments will follow suit.

"Really we want more and more of the surroudning communities to piggyback off of what cities like Lafayette are doing to really provide a greater security blanket to the area," said Agulnek.

Within the next week Butram says the technology is expected to be in more than ten department vehicles.
