LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Tippecanoe County Coroner identified a Lafayette man who was found dead at the Pheasant Run Apartments as 29-year-old Ryan Martin.
According to court documents released from the prosecutor's office, they believe 19-year-old Talmadge Jasper killed Martin. The investigation started when a woman called police to report that her ex-boyfriend, Jasper, was inside her house on Kenosha Court.
The woman had a protective order against Jasper. She also told police that her boyfriend, Ryan Martin, was missing. Police got a search warrant for Jasper's apartment, where they found Martin's body in a closet. Police said there were signs of blunt force trauma to Martin's body.
"It's just sad," said neighbor Torrey Coleman, who lives caddy-corner to the home Martin and his girlfriend lived in.
Coleman said he and his family have lived in this neighborhood for two years. He said he likes the culture of the neighborhood.
"The neighborhood is nice it's peaceful it's quiet it's family oriented over here," he said.
And with young kids of his own, he said he has always felt safe living here. Martin's family told News 18 that he left behind a 4-year-old daughter.
"It's scary that it's this close to my home because I have little kids who run around here too," said Coleman. He said he had seen Martin and the woman enjoying the outdoors earlier this week.
"I never really talked or interacted with them but you know they were family oriented, living their life and enjoying their life," he said. A life that was eventually taken too soon.
"You've got a whole life ahead of you and now someone's taken that from you," he said. "A mother lost her son, a father lost his son, brothers, sisters lost a sibling."
News 18 had been in contact with the family throughout the day, but they said they are not ready to give a comment. The Pheasant Run Apartment complex also declined to comment.
Coleman has a message for the family.
"I'm sorry for your loss," he said. "I wish that we could do something for you, if there is, my door is open."
Talmadge Jasper is behind bars at the Tippecanoe County Jail on preliminary charges of Murder, Residential Entry and Invasion of Privacy.
Prosecutors have filed a 72-hour old on Jasper. Because of the holiday weekend, that means it could be Thursday before Jasper is formally charged.
This marks the third murder in Lafayette so far this year. As we reported on Wednesday, since 2014 Lafayette has never seen a year with more than four murders.
