WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Many Democratic candidates declared their intent to run for West Lafayette City Council Wednesday.

Some are previous council members and some are running for the first time.

One of those council members running for the first time is a freshman at Purdue. Shannon Kang is studying political science and if she wins she will represent district three.

She said she is happy and ready to do what it takes to win. She added when she told her parents they were a little confused.

"They said 'are you going to be a congresswoman' and i said 'no no no not a congresswoman' and I explained to them and they are really excited," said Kang.

The deadline to run for office in West Lafayette is Feb. 9th.

Primaries are in May.
