WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI)—The City of Monticello is celebrating a milestone. Monticello was recently recognized as a smart rural community.
This recognition is in partnership with Lightstream. It's a company that provides fiber-optic broadband services. The goal is aimed at bringing high speed internet to rural areas.
Lightstream was recently awarded by the National Broadband Association. President and CEO of Lightstream, Brent Gillum said it's amazing to showcase the progression of rural areas during a pandemic.
"To be able to share this with our community and watch it develop and grow and be able to provide that opportunity for many years and decades in the future is very important to us," said Gillum.
Mayor Cathy Gross said this recognition is a part of her mission to move the city forward.
"Because of these important partnerships we are able to constantly make a difference in our community," said Mayor Gross.
Lightstream is also offering free wi-fi at Monticello's city park indefinitely.
