LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — McCutcheon is looking to take the next step in 2020.
The Mavericks have posted a winning record in each of the last six seasons but they've only won three sectional games — no sectional title.
McCutcheon hasn't won a sectional crown since 1999.
For a third straight season, the Mavericks have a new starting quarterback.
Micah Bryant to get the nod on Friday night in the team's season opener against Guerin Catholic.
Bryant beat out senior Zach Weathers.
Head coach Ken Frauhiger noted Bryant's game-decision making as one reason why he won the job.
The 6-foot-1, 175 pound senior will succeed Mason Douglas, who graduated this past spring.
McCutcheon finished 6-5 last season falling to Harrison in a sectional championship contest.
That was with Douglas running the show and that's not an exaggeration.
Douglas ran for 1,094 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Purdue Fort Wayne baseball signee also threw for 1,062 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Bryant has some tough shoes to fill but Frauhiger believes he is more than capable to help the Mavericks take the next step in 2020.
