STOCKWELL, Ind. (WLFI) — One man is in custody after a three-hour police standoff and bomb scare that started Wednesday night and lasted into Thursday morning.
The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office was called about 9: 30 p.m. Wednesday to a domestic incident at a house in the 6900 block of Church Street.
Lt. Brian Lowe says 35-year-old James Paxton barricaded himself in a shed and claimed to have doused himself in gasoline.
He says Paxton threw a homemade explosive toward police while speaking with crisis negotiators. The device allegedly had a wick and contained explosive material but didn't ignite.
"He indicated it was a bomb and then upon further look there was explosive material inside of it ... some kind of a homemade device, pipe bomb type thing, and it looked like it had been attempted to be lit but luckily it didn't light," Lowe says.
Paxton was eventually taken into custody on preliminary charges of domestic violence and possession of an explosive device.
He is undergoing mental health evaluations at a local hospital.
