LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — School districts across the Greater Lafayette area are headed back to school this week, and transportation officials are asking the public to be aware of school buses and children on the roadways.
The Tippecanoe School Corporation along with Lafayette School Corporation and the West Lafayette Community School Corporation all start class August 20.
TSC Transportation Director Greg Haltom speaks about the importance of being aware at all times. Especially while children and school buses are on the local roadways.
"Paying a fine is going to be the biggest thing," said Haltom.
"I think it's pretty hefty at this point."
"I think the other thing to think about is is, yeah you may get a pretty hefty fine, but you may never clear your conscious of hitting a child that's crossing the street doing something like getting on a school bus just because you were late or weren't paying attention."
Fines for not stopping while a school bus is stopped generally cost around $230.
