WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Officers from West Lafayette Police Department, Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office and Benton County Sheriff's Office took local kids shopping Saturday.

Local police departments have spent most of the year working on to be able to put on the "Shop with a Cop" event.

Police took children around the store and helped them cross items off their Christmas lists. Many children were grateful to get a new coat for winter.

Beth Kidwell, Deputy Sheriff and FOP secretary said seeing officers interact with children is her favorite part of the event.

"It breaks down the officer a little bit and they get down on the kids level and laugh and we get some really cute candid pictures of the kids and the officers so yeah it's a one of a kind experience," said Kidwell.

After the shop with a cop event, all the children and police officers went to Klondike elementary school. Santa was waiting there with gifts for everyone to open.
