TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI)—Local medical professionals are voicing their concern over the mask mandate lifting next week.
Dr. James Bien with IU Health Arnett said with more COVID-19 variants being detected in the U.S. it's important people don't become lax. He said people still have to commit to the simple public health measures that have been implemented.
Dr. Bien said masks are doing an incredible job at minimizing the likely hood of spreading COVID-19.
"And yet spread is still occurring," said Bien. "We are not ready to remove masks, the disease is still very prevalent in the community, there are more and more variants entering our community and we all need to double down on masks, hand hygiene, social distancing when we are around others who are not a part of our family."
Dr. Bien said with the mask mandate lifting for the state next week he encourages people to get their vaccine as we fight against this coronavirus.
"I think it's unfortunate the mask mandate is going away," said Bien. "I don't think that's the right decision because it seems to give people permission to back away from what we know is a disease preventing action that we all can take."
