LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) -- Our local community is commemorating Juneteenth in many ways Friday evening.
People gathered at Columbian Park in support of African-American history and heritage.
There was food off the grill, snacks, drinks and a couple local musicians played a free concert.
Vanessa Pacheco said Juneteenth is an important reminder that Greater Lafayette needs to continue to highlight the contributions of all people.
Pacheco is very involved in helping minority groups and voices succeed in the community.
She said on this day people always strive for positive change.
"Days like this are an opportunity for us to rebuild some powerful connections, for us to get closer to what kind of community we want to be in, so days like today are necessary especially if we can do that in a safe way," said Pacheco.
The celebration lasted for a few hours and everyone was invited.
