LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)—What used to be a law office has been transformed into a Lazy Cat Lounge.
"It's really nice. We've been excited about this for a long time,” said Co-owner, Zachary Vanmeter. “Six-months ago we started putting all of this together. Finally got a space, finally popular in the way we would like, finally got the cats in here."
After 27-year-old Zachary and 24-year-old Kennedy Vanmeter saw cat cafes while traveling to Japan, they were inspired to re-create the idea at home.
"They are all over there,” said Co-owner, Kennedy Vanmeter. “They were a great way for a town where people don't get to have a lot of adoptions and bring cats to their house and the idea originated from Asia so I think it's a fun cultural idea to experience too."
The cafe operates like an adoption center inside a coffee shop. While customers enjoy beverages they'll get to know the kittens as they wander the cafe.
"We also host nine to twelve at a time adoptable cats from My New Cat Rescue and hopefully if you fall in love with a cat you get to take it home,” said Vanmeter.
Customers pay an entry fee of nine dollars an hour. Which takes care of the kitties medical bills, food, and the cafe itself. Vanmeter said this is a great way for people to adopt instead of shop.
"When I moved here I saw that there was a big feral cat problem, I worked at the animal shelter locally for a while,” said Vanmeter. “We always had more cats then we could handle. So I thought Lafayette needed another place for cats to be instead of out on the streets."
Vanmeter goes on to say with this setting customers have the ability to really experience the cat's personality before choosing to take it home.
"I like that it's a calm environment for the cats too,” said Vanmeter. “Coming from a shelter background you can see cat's personalities much more here than you can in a small cage all day."
If you'd like to meet these furry friends, you can at 846 Main St. in Downtown Lafayette.
