LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)—Third-grade teacher at Edgelea Elementary, Mandy Miller joins the rest of our educators in being relentless in making sure their students are taken care of and resilient to the challenges this year has brought on. That's why she was nominated as a Hometown Hero in December.
"I teach with a lot of humor and I focus on building relationships and being engaging," said Miller.
Like many teachers, Miller has had to adapt to an acquired way of teaching, E-learning. While her teaching style hasn't changed, moving her teaching style to an online format has been challenging.
"The tools that we are using, the way we communicate and how hard it is to build those relationships with students virtually," said Miller.
The virtual world hasn't changed Miller's passion, she spends many hours outside of working hours to engage and motivate her students who can't currently be in the classroom right now.
"My students have been great," said Miller. "I try to keep a very structured schedule that they can get used to right away."
Miller also has a mystery reader program where a surprise guest comes in and reads to the class then talks about their career. She said it motivates her students to realize they can become anything they want to be.
"I'm not doing anything different that the rest of the teachers in my corporation or in the world aren't doing but it's also really nice to be recognized and it's nice for the profession itself," said Miller.
Just like her colleagues, Mandy Miller is dedicated to giving her students the best education she possibly can. That's why she says she'll never stop creating a positive impact.
"Whether they are at home or here in the classroom, whether they are third grades or seniors they will always be considered my kids because of the relationship we built when I had them for a year," said Miller.
-and for that reason, she's our Hometown Hero.
Each month WLFI will honor a Hometown Hero selected by their peers. The person receives a gift card and of course an interview that will air during newscasts so that everyone can meet the person who created a positive impact.
Hometown Heroes is proudly sponsored by Westminster Village. We all know someone in our community that's going above and beyond to make a difference. Let Westminster and WLFI help you recognize that person for all they do. If you have someone you'd like to see recognized click here.
